Tap and toilet repairs in Sale

Leaking tap or running toilet in Sale? Washer and cartridge repairs, cistern faults, toilet suite replacement, price bands and the 2027 star rating rule.

Tap and toilet repairs in Sale cover the small, common plumbing jobs: replacing a washer, cartridge or seat in a dripping tap or mixer, fixing a cistern that keeps running or refills slowly, resealing a loose pan, and replacing a whole toilet suite. Most of these are quick jobs a plumber prices from a description and a photo. From 1 March 2027, replacement taps, showers and toilets fitted as part of larger regulated work must meet minimum water efficiency star ratings.

The plumber who takes on your tap or toilet job is an independent local business that quotes and fixes it in its own right; this website only sends your enquiry to it. See the about page for how that works.

Why fix a dripping tap or running toilet quickly?

A tap that drips steadily, or a cistern that trickles into the pan all day, wastes water around the clock and shows up on the water bill. On a rural block on tank water, it also runs the tank down and makes the pump cycle. The longer a worn washer or seat is left, the more the brass seat can wear, which turns a washer job into a reseat or a new tap.

Common faults:

  • Tap drips from the spout after it is turned off: worn washer, worn ceramic disc or damaged seat.
  • Water leaks around the handle or spindle: worn O-rings or gland packing.
  • Mixer drips or will not hold temperature: worn cartridge.
  • Toilet keeps running or hisses: inlet valve not shutting, or the outlet seal letting water through.
  • Cistern fills slowly: blocked or failing inlet valve, or a partly closed isolation tap.
  • Water on the floor around the pan: failed pan connector or seal, or a cracked pan.
  • Toilet rocks: loose fixings or a deteriorated seal under the pan.

How can you tell if a cistern is leaking into the pan?

Use the food dye test. Lift the cistern lid, add a few drops of food colouring to the water in the cistern, and do not flush for 20 to 30 minutes. If colour appears in the pan, water is leaking past the outlet seal. If the cistern water keeps rising into the overflow, the inlet valve is not shutting off. Both are cheap parts, and a plumber can usually tell which one from your result. If a leak is not at the fixture at all, for example a meter that keeps turning with everything off, the leak detection page explains how hidden leaks are found.

Repair or replace: which makes sense?

Situation Usual answer Why
Old-style tap with worn washer Repair Washers and seats are cheap and standard
Mixer with a known-brand cartridge Repair Cartridges are often still available
Mixer with no parts available Replace A cartridge hunt can cost more than a new tap
Cistern running, pan and cistern sound Repair Inlet valve and outlet seal kits fit most cisterns
Cracked pan or cistern Replace Cracks cannot be safely repaired
Very old single flush toilet Often replace New suites use far less water per flush
Bathroom renovation Replace Fixtures change as part of the bigger job

What changes for taps and toilets from 1 March 2027?

The Plumbing Amendment Regulations 2026 start on 1 March 2027. Under them, household basin taps must have a minimum 5-star water efficiency rating, and kitchen and laundry taps, showers and toilets a minimum 4-star rating. Victoria’s building reform page explains that the ratings apply to regulated plumbing work above the compliance certificate threshold, in new and existing buildings. They do not apply when a homeowner replaces a fixture themselves, or when the plumbing work is under the threshold.

In practice, a washer or cartridge repair is unlikely to trigger the rule. A new toilet suite fitted by a plumber can, because the BPC counts the price of the suite itself toward the threshold, and a bathroom or kitchen renovation done by a plumber after that date almost certainly will. If you are buying fixtures ahead of a renovation, check the star rating on the label so they can still be used. The compliance certificate guide explains how the threshold works.

What does a careful plumber check on a tap or toilet job?

  1. Turn off the isolation tap or the mains and check the valve actually holds.
  2. Identify the tap or cistern brand and model so the right parts are used.
  3. Check the seat inside the tap body for wear as well as the washer.
  4. On a toilet, check the pan connector, the floor fixings and the seal.
  5. Check the isolation tap under the cistern, since an old one often leaks once moved.
  6. Test for leaks after the repair and run a few flushes or cycles.

A plumber should fit a new toilet with a proper pan connector and seal and leave the floor dry; if the floor under an old toilet is rotten or soft, they should tell you before fitting a new suite on it.

How does a typical repair visit run?

For a dripping tap, the plumber shuts off the water, removes the handle and headwork, inspects the washer or cartridge and the seat, replaces the worn parts, reseats the tap body with a seat cutting tool if needed, reassembles and tests. For a mixer, the cartridge is swapped for the matching one, which is why the brand matters. A running cistern usually gets a new inlet valve or outlet washer, or a full internal kit if the parts are old. Replacing a whole toilet suite means removing the old pan and cistern, checking the floor and the sewer connection, fitting a new pan connector and seal, fixing the pan down, connecting the cistern to the water supply and testing several flushes for leaks.

What should you do while you wait for the plumber?

  • For a tap that will not stop running, close the isolation valve under the sink, or the mains at the meter.
  • For a cistern that keeps filling, turn the small isolation tap behind or under the toilet clockwise until it stops.
  • For water around the base of the toilet, stop using it and put towels down; a leaking pan connector can carry waste water.
  • Keep any parts that fall out, and note the brand printed on the tap or cistern.

How much do tap and toilet repairs cost in Sale?

Published regional figures from The Quote Yard for Gippsland in 2026 give these bands. Your plumber sets the actual price.

Job Typical range
Dripping tap or mixer repaired (washer, cartridge or seat) $125 to $280

The source is The Quote Yard guide to plumbers in Gippsland. The toilet suite band covers removal and fitting; the cost of the suite you choose depends on the model. Grouping several small jobs into one visit, such as two dripping taps and a running cistern, usually costs less than separate call-outs. The Sale plumbing cost guide has the full list of local bands. When you have your fixture details, book a tap or toilet repair quote.

Do homes outside Sale need anything different?

On tank water, as on many blocks around Stratford, sediment can wear tap washers and cistern valves faster, so filters on the supply line help. The Stratford area page covers the rural blocks around that town.

Next step

For a tap or toilet enquiry, list each fixture that needs work and where it is in the house, what it is doing (dripping, running, leaking at the base), the brand if you can see it, your food dye test result for a toilet, and whether you are on town water or tank. A close photo of the tap or the inside of the cistern helps the plumber bring the right parts. Then send your tap and toilet repair enquiry and a Sale plumber will get back to you.

Frequently asked questions

Why does a new washer not always stop a drip?

The washer presses against a brass seat inside the tap body. If that seat is pitted or worn, water gets past even a new washer. A plumber can recut the seat with a reseating tool or fit a replaceable seat, and if the body is too worn, replace the tap.

Why does my toilet keep running after I flush?

Either the inlet valve is not shutting off when the cistern is full, so water spills into the overflow, or the flush valve seal is letting water leak into the pan. Both are worn parts inside the cistern and can usually be replaced without changing the whole toilet.

How long does a new toilet suite take to install?

A straightforward swap on the same floor connection usually takes a few hours, including removal of the old suite. Extra time is needed if the floor is damaged, the pan outlet sits in a different spot, or the water connection needs moving.

Do I need a compliance certificate for a tap repair?

A washer or cartridge repair is a small job and usually falls well under the value that triggers a compliance certificate. Larger work, such as a bathroom renovation, can exceed it. Ask the plumber up front whether a certificate will be issued for your job.

Is a mixer tap harder to repair than an old two-handle tap?

Two-handle taps use standard washers and seats that most plumbers carry. Mixers use a cartridge specific to the brand and model, so the plumber needs the exact part. Knowing the brand before the visit, or sending a photo, saves a second trip to collect the right cartridge.
